The Gray Hatter

I promised in a few Posts back that I would explain what a
Black,
Gray,
and
White Hat Hackers 
were.

My one time consistent Annotator, Yaz129, said she was looking forward to it.

Well,
Yaz129 hasn't commented since I mentioned I would explain the different types of
Hats
in my Post,
"Sorry To A Couple Of Darknet Using Friends Of Mine."

The United States Government has one of the most prolific
"Black Hat Hacker Organizations"
around.
It's called the
"NSA."

They are not the only ones.

Almost every modernized Government in the World has an organization that hacks into
World Corporations
and other 
Governments.

Remember
North Korea
hacking into
Sony Pictures
for releasing the movie
"The Interview?"

Black Hat Hackers 
are the most prolific,
noticeable hacking individuals in society today,
as far as cyber crime is concerned.

That's because of Hollywood and the Media.

These two Entities love to portray 
Hackers
as one group of individuals,
wearing some kind of
"Vendetta"
mask,
(Of course the group "Anonymous" does.)
sitting at computers all hours of the day
and night,
disrupting
Corporations
and
Governments
for their own benefit.

Most
Black Hatters
do hack for personal gain,
like stealing Social Security Numbers,
Credit Card Numbers,
or any kind of information they can sell about a person on the
"Darknet"
or
"Black Market."

Unless a 
Black Hat
is completely underhanded,
vicious,
and totally unethical,
like sending out Bots to infect numerous computers at one time,
or setting up a Botnet for fraudulent monetary gain,
the best
Black Hatters 
become
White Hat Hackers
for the same
Corporations 
and
Governments
they've hacked.

You see,
once they get caught,
since they discovered issues with a particular system's security,
and no one else saw it,
even the creator of the system ,
they get jobs doing what they like to do best,
hacking.

But now they do it for the right reason.

Or supposedly for the right reason.

Corporate espionage is a big issue here.

With hackers from all kinds of different Corporations hacking each other.

Black Hat Hackers
 are cyber criminals for the most part.

White Hat Hackers
are employed to be
hackers
to find vulnerabilities in a secured system.

Now
Gray Hat Hackers 
fall in between the
Black Hats
and the
White Hats.

I'll give you an example.

Since there are still people foolish enough to be paying for the
AOL Email Service.

They probably think they are secured because of it.
Right?

I could blow their hopes
and dreams right out of the water,
if I was still into that kind of thing.

I've reformed,
though.

Back to my example.

In the 1990s,
when dial-up service was still King,
I backed door
AOL.

This is before
DSL
and the
Cable Modem
were available
and even until they were just beginning to sell their service.

Back then,
I always signed my emails with the closing line,
"Keep the Internet Free!"

This is because,
when I first started out,
you had to pay a monthly fee for a
Web Browser 
and a
Web Service 
to get on the 
Internet.

I remember paying for
Mosaic,
later it became known as
Netscape.

So one day,
I decided,
I was no longer going to pay for Internet Browsing.

AOL had just come out and the service had so many back doors that I could enter,
I never had to pay for dial-up service
or for a browser again.

Of course,
when DSL
and the Cable Modem came out,
I quickly changed my tune since I couldn't wait minutes for something I could get in seconds.

Well,
I didn't have to pay for that service either until January of 2009.

But that's another story.

So in conclusion,
Black Hatters are Cyber Criminals.

White Hatters are Legal Criminals.

And
Gray Hatters are nice individuals
who get tired of paying for
Fat Cats in Corporate Offices 
and all their
luxuries.

If you ever downloaded free music in the day of
"Napster"
or are using a
Torrent 
today for free music,
movies,
or TV shows,
you my friend,
are a
Gray Hatter.

Not that you are
Gray Hat Hacking
into a secured system,
but you are a
Gray Hatter 
for circumventing
Corporate
and
Government
greed!
