One spirit appears on the first landing of the staircase as the other turns around, away from the oak door and looks up.
"You're acting strange today sister." Mirlande says to Widelene. "Why would you help a complete stranger leave the house when you spent everyday torturing your little brother and never let him go outside while he was alive?"
"First of all," Widelene answers sardonically. "Do you feel our brother's presence in the house any longer? No you don't. Because he got to move on while we are stuck here for all eternity. Or, until the curse sends us to Hell for our father's sins. It's just not fair."
Though the living see spirits as a grayish haze when they manifest, Mirlande sees her twin as she once was. She is seeing the anger and hatred her sister has for all living creatures build on her face.
"Second of all," Widelene yells at her sister. "While you were following the husband around, I found out that the wife is pregnant." After a large smile slowly crosses Widelene's face, she starts laughing maniacally and says. "I will have that child for my own. I will mentally and physically torture it until the day it dies."
"Jean-Claude did not deserve your scorn and neither will this child." Mirlande says with definition. "Our father and mother are the ones you should blame. Not every living soul. They are the ones who stole all that gourde from the people of Pétion-Ville. People who trusted them with their lives."
"I am so sorry sister," Widelene pleads apologetically. Then, with a quick reversal of attitude, she swoops up the stairs inches from Mirlande's face and adds screaming, "Oh wait. I cannot take revenge on our parents because I do not feel their presence in the house either! They both have moved on while I wither away here with you, my sister. I can only hope that they both descended into Hell for what they have done to us!"
Mirlande shakes her ghostly head back and forth while feeling sorry for her. "Dear sister. I already know that I can move on because I have asked for forgiveness and have released myself of hate. I am only here because I believe you can be forgiven too! All you have to do is leave the hate behind."
Widelene's face has a look of disbelief. She floats through the wall behind her into another part of the mansion leaving her sister alone. In the farthest room from the stairs, Widelene looks out the window wishing she could feel ground under her feet. Wishing she could just go outside without fighting the evening winds from floating her away from the only place she has ever known.
After a few minutes of silence, through the structure of the house, Mirlande hears her twin say loudly, "Go. What do I care? I have a new playmate moving in soon. To do with, whatever I want." A shrilling laugh reverberates down to the very foundation. "I believe sister, that the child and I will become good friends for the next fifty years or so."
