“Gloomy Sunday”
was written in
1933
by two
Hungarians.
Rezso Seress
wrote the music
wrote the music

Laszlo Javor
penned the lyrics.

The song drew little attention until 1936,
when it began to be connected with a
rash of suicides in
and was allegedly banned afterwards.
Up to
Seventeen Suicides
were reportedly linked in some way to the song.
This included people who reportedly killed themselves after
listening to the song.
Either from a recording
or performed live by a band.
Some were said to have been found dead with references to the song's lyrics in their suicide notes.
With others holding the sheet music in their hands when they died.
It was also banned in
for sixty-six years.
American Musicians
and
Singers
soon jumped at the chance to record translated versions of the
By the end
of
1936
several recordings were made available to the
American Public.
The
version,
recorded several years later,
is the
most popular
English Language
version of the song.
Supposedly,
since I do not speak
Hungarian
I cannot be sure,
but the translated version in
English
does not give it justice.

Vége a világnak,vége a reménynek Városok pusztulnak, srapnelek zenélnek. Emberek vérétől piros a tarka rét. Halottak fekszenek az úton szerteszét. Még egyszer elmondom csendben az imámat: "Uram, az emberek gyarlók és hibáznak..." Vége a világnak!
